1990. Deciso di tornare a vivere a New York, non so per quanto e questa volta senza il Joe Zattere. Sono in Manhattan e vivo per tutta una primavera con il painter Hamlet Manzueta (parlo di lui in "Diary" #3) dividendoci l'affitto in Mott Street al 278, nel cuore di Greenwich Village. Nei 20 anni precedenti ho dormito vera-mente in tutte le vie più cool, compresa Christopher Street e Spring e tutte le altre. Hamlet – che quando sono arrivato mi ha regalato un Pee Wee Doll – mette la sveglia alle 6 per alzarsi alle 8, così suona ogni mezz'ora e credo che gli dirò subito il fatto che io col suo sistema dormirò poco. Camminato dalle 9 alle 13 per tutta Chinatown, tutti erano cinesi e preparavano le bancarelle. Fatto veloce breakfast  in zona Astor Place (dove taglio i capelli dai barbieri italiani) e mi hanno chiesto se volevo le uova col sole sopra o col sole sopra e, ho risposto una cosa qualsiasi. Comprato Olivetti da 76 dollari e ho scoperto che è 'Made in Mexico'. Oggi 29 maggio, il primo sindaco nero di NY, Dinkins, festeggia 100 giorni di incarico e io ho dato 1 dollaro a homeless vecchissimo nero anche lui. Fatto pellegrinaggio in 28esima, Penn Station, per guardare il portone della mia scuola d'inglese dove andavo nell'83 quando ero con il Joe; e costa 300 per 1 settimana e non per 1 mese. Hamlet mi ha portato nel negozio della sarta Patricia Field, e gli ha detto – anziché non dirglielo – che sono un italiano cagionevole. Lei mi piace subito tanto. Greca. Lesbo. Definitiva. Patricia sta con la danzatrice Rebecca Yo Yo che sta col performer Richard Move (parlo di loro in "Diary" #4). Diventiamo subito amici e tutti mi chiamano Ziano. La sera dormo qualche volta da Patricia che è innamorata del fatto che parlo sempre in 'italiano misto a basilico' e lei compra la mozzarella sbagliata in 14esima e io abuso – per aiutare – del mio senso estetico. La sera usciamo tutti insieme per andare a saltare, bere e drogarci nelle disco "Limelight" (una chiesa sconsacrata immensa), o "Love Machine", o "Redzone", o "Quick!", o "Pyramid" (dove incontro il filmmaker John Waters) o "Roxy", o "Sound Factory", o mio preferito, "Mars" (dove si è gay oppure sposati con figli). Ad un certo punto arrivano amici da Milano, anche Nicola Guiducci insomma Mister "Plastic" alias "Killer" noto Nicky Wells   , Dunia Lipowec, Patty Tish e perfino Javier Regueiro. Uh, ih, eh.. Happy nights in the memory; absolut extravaganza nella mela big. Patricia si tira dietro sempre le 'drag queen' e mi insegna ad amarle (poi capirò perché). Così mi introduce a La Homa, Tina Paul, Les Simpson, Chip Duckett, Cody Ravioli, Michael Alig (sì-sì, quello di "Party Monster"), Barbara Dente e altri-tanti friendly.

Patricia Field è nata a metà degli anni quaranta a New York da madre greca, e il suo volto antico ed orgoglioso ne è la prova. Il suo negozio in Manhattan si chiama "House of Field", uno store stracolmo di abbigliamento fra il più stravagante della metropoli; le commesse sono delle bellissime travestite, velocissime e simpaticamente gossip. Dal suo negozio passano artisti, grafici, giovani attori. Tutti i creativi della Grande Mela indossano qualcosa di Field, come una specie di status symbol. Patricia sembra sempre che stia per andare via, l'idea che non abbia tempo, ma ti sta sempre ad ascoltare e guardare nello sguardo. Il volto, celebrato da enormi orecchini di cristallo opaco, trasmette una tranquillità regale. Patricia è una principessa, ma anche una santa, o una maga che legge il destino azzeccandolo. Si porta sempre dietro un libro scritto in greco e tradotto in inglese, perché è molto attaccata alla terra dei suoi antenati. Naturalmente i suoi vizi sono anche le sue virtù. Ma in una delle trenta sere del giugno 1990, in casa sua, si apre e si racconta: «Tutto è iniziato nel 1965 quando ho aperto lo shop. Volevo mettermi in proprio ed ho incominciato con un posto che è un quarto di questo. Eppure diventò trendy in poco tempo. Sono partita con una collezione da me disegnata, ma non ho mai cercato un mio stile, anche se tutti oggi mi riconoscono per il mio stile, senza che io abbia mai fatto niente per inventarlo. Quando le cose stavano diventando troppo grandi mi sono fermata, e ho ricominciato solo pochi anni fa. Adesso ho qualcuno che si prende cura delle mie creazioni e tutto sta andando per il meglio. Le mie fantasie di abbigliamento sono belle, e non costano molto; tutti i giovani creativi, anche quelli senza soldi, indossano le mie cose. Il mio business è a carattere familiare e questo mi piace. Tutta la gente che lavora con me è protetta dalla mia 'House', e questo è importante in un paese come l'America, dove la famiglia non esiste, o è allo sfascio. Noi viviamo in un paese fascista, come era in Germania o nella Roma antica. Così, tutto quello che stiamo facendo nello shop, sono per drag queen, perché voglio metterlo in culo al fashion system. Quando la gente viene nel mio negozio credono di essere in una fantasy land. E questo è molto bello. Spesso le loro vite sono orribili e oscure mentre la nostra è colorata ed energica. A NY c'è il blackout, non abbiamo notizie dall'Europa, siamo isolati, ma la città risorgerà di nuovo e tutto andrà per il meglio».

La maga lo aveva detto. Dieci anni dopo cadono le Twin Towers. 20 anni dopo – oggi giugno 2010 – Patricia è una leggenda del costume cinematografico e fashion; due dei suoi capolavori , "Sex in the City" and "Il diavolo veste Prada". Insomma, trattasi di genio.

Patricia Field was raised in   Astoria, Queens. She has claimed credit for inventing the modern legging for women's fashion in the 1970s. She is the owner of Patricia Field, a boutique located at 302 Bowery in Manhattan. Field met Sarah Jessica Parker during the filming of 1995's Miami Rhapsody. The actress became so enchanted with Field's collections that they became friends and continued working with her on the series Sex and the City. Before beginning the first season of the Sex and the City television series on HBO, Parker asked to have Field design some of the clothes that her character, Carrie Bradshaw, would wear. During Field's tenure as costume designer on "Sex and the City", the show became famous for the fashions showcased. For her work on this film, Field was nominated for 5 Emmy Awards, with one win, and nominated for 6 Costume Designers Guild Awards, with 4 wins. She is one out of six Honorees of the 2008 Reel Time Film Festival. She went on to return as Costume Designer for "Sex and the City: the Movie" (2008) and the sequel "Sex and the City 2" (2010). Field has even worked in the Asian market by creating the fashion behind the Chinese feature film "杜拉拉升职记" ("Go Lala Go", 2010). Field has been in constant demand by some high society clientele ever since, and some of her designs have become well-known. Her television credits include Hope & Faith and Ugly Betty. She served as costume designer for the feature film The Devil Wears Prada, for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design, although in an extensive interview included as a bonus feature on the film's DVD release, she admits she dressed the cast by gathering garments from other designers' ready-to-wear collections rather than creating them herself. Field, who is openly lesbian, was for many years romantically committed to costume designer Rebecca Weinberg, with whom she has partnered on "Sex & the City" and Spin City. Field also appeared as the first guest judge during the first season of the Bravo reality television series Project Runway. Field has been seen in the USA and Athens with Greek superstar Anna Vissi, whom she is good friends with. Vissi went to the Oscars with Field in 2006. Patricia Field boutique was featured in a 2007 episode of Kathy Griffin's reality show My Life on the D-List, as well as on a 2008 episode of Paris Hilton's My New BFF. Field also designed the outfits in Namie Amuro's music videos for her three songs from her single 60s 70s 80s, as well as Vissi's music videos for Stin Pyra and Alitissa Psihi from her album Apagorevmeno. Patricia Field's clothing line will be on HSNtv began Sept. 23, 2008. She is currently working on "Ugly Betty" as Costume Designer.
